iPhone more popular than Mas Selamat

Somewhat remarkably, Singapore's Google users looked up '3g iphone' more than they did 'mas selamat' this year. On Google's list of search trends for 2008, '3g iphone' was number 5 on the list of local searches in Google News. Escaped fugitive Mas Selamat only managed 9th position, ahead of paddler Feng Tianwei, though to be fair, 'singapore terrorist' was number 3 on that list. The top search term on Google News from Singapore was 'singapore olympics'.

In other fascinating but non-iPhone related discoveries, Maxwell hawker centre was the top hawker centre looked up, beating Newton, while chicken rice grabbed pole position on the local food list, ahead of 'punggol crab noodle'.

The most popular search term from Singapore was 'lyrics' (why??) while Hong Kong actor 'Edison Chen' was the fastest rising search term after his sex photos hit the web. (Update: the iPhone was number 4 on the fastest rising list).

Myanmar To Introduce Wireless Internet System Next Year

Myanmar is striving to introduce a wireless internet system of WiFi by early next year, Xinhua quoted the local weekly 7-Day News as reporting Wednesday.

Arranged by the local IT company of Exotic Wing, the system will be in service starting with the coverage of 16 main townships in the former capital city of Yangon, the company sources was quoted as saying.

Provisionally, such system is being granted for use in Yangon's Hyper Market and Sakura Tower only and WiFi hot spots are being installed in the hub of the city to enable that the system could formally start running in early next January, the report said.

By then, laptops with the WiFi system can enter the world from any corner of the city, the Chinese news agency quoted the report as saying.

Meanwhile, Myanmar has planned full coverage of public access centers (PAC) in every township in the country by next March to facilitate communication links.

There are so far 240 PAC in Myanmar, according to the Myanmar Info-Tech.

The telecommunications authorities also revealed that the number of internet users in Myanmar has also reached nearly 300, 000, up from merely dozens four years ago.

Myanmar has been striving for the development of ICT to contribute its part to the national economic development.

In December 2007, Myanmar's first largest ICT park, also known as the Yadanabon Myothit Cyber City, was introduced in Pyin Oo Lwin, a northern city of Myanmar in Mandalay division.

The cyber city, which covers an overall area of 10,000 acres (4, 050 hectares), is located in the hilly Pyin Oo Lwin near a highway, 67 kilometers east of the second largest city of Mandalay in the north, and 20 percent of the cyber city area produce software and hardware.

The internet of the cyber city not only links with the whole country but also connect neighboring China, Thailand and India.

Meanwhile, more and more local and foreign information technology (IT) companies have sought investment in the cyber city for the development of IT business undertakings.

According to the authorities, it has allotted 372 acres (150 hectares) of land plot for 35 more local and foreign IT companies to work in the cyber city.

Myanmar has been lunching ICT development master plan under the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) and detailed programs to link international networks are also being carried out in accordance with the master plan drafted by the Myanmar Computer Federation.

Being a signatory to the e-ASEAN Framework Agreement initiated at 2000 Singapore summit, Myanmar has formed the e-National Task Force to support the IT development.

Besides, the country has also signed a series of memorandums of understanding since 2003 with such companies as from Malaysia, Thailand, China and South Korea on ICT development.

MHA clarifies its stance on Myanmar work permit rejections

THE message has been made clear: Foreign nationals who want to work or live here
are expected to respect the law and local sensitivities, just as Singaporeans do.
And with eight of their fellow countrymen failing to get their immigration passes renewed by the authorities after taking part in a gathering on Orchard Road during the Asean Summit last November, some Myanmar nationals here have taken the message to heart.

Ms Pan Thinzar, 26, a student who took part in the Orchard Road protest, has sworn
off all protests. “If another violent crackdown happens (in Myanmar), I’ll channel
my emotions through meditation, or through online petitions,” she told Today.
Research fellow Mr Zeyar Aung, 34, who has yet to take part in any demonstration
here, has no plans to do so unless it is legal and approved by the authorities.
But taking a different line, Mr J J Edward Su, an executive committee member of the
Overseas Burmese Patriots (OBP), said the latest developments will not deter its members from demonstrating their political beliefs.

On Friday, the group held its second press conference in a month, asking for the
reasons why the passes of the eight were not renewed. “We will still continue with our social and political activities,” said Mr Su. But when pressed, he declined to say what activities the group had planned.

In response to queries, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that the police
and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority have “no objection to members of
the Myanmarese community in Singapore pursuing their political activities so long as
they abide by our laws. Indeed, the Police has approved and facilitated many such activities conducted through lawful means”.

However, it said that, unlike other groups which have conducted their activities in a lawful manner, the “OBP has chosen to do so in open and persistent defiance of our laws. OBP members were investigated by the police for staging a number of illegal protests. The authorities have chosen to issue several of them with a warning for
their offences instead of prosecution, so as to give them a second chance.”

The police had summoned around 40 people who had taken part in a street protest last November to a police station to help with investigations, and later let them off with a warning. “Regrettably, this leniency is not appreciated. Some of the individuals concerned in the OBP continue to maintain a position that suggests they see themselves being above the law which Singaporeans observe. “The OBP members have ignored repeated advice from the Police to act within our laws, and also ignored requests by government officials to meet to discuss the group’s conduct.”

The MHA spokesperson also noted: “The right of a foreign national to work or stay in Singapore is not a matter of entitlement or a right to be secured by political demand and public pressure.” Of the eight Myanmar nationals who did not have their immigration passes renewed, six have left Singapore and are living in countries including Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand. The other two, Ms Ngwe Zin Soe and Mr Wunna Saw Thein, both Permanent Residents, are still waiting for their re-entry permits to be renewed.

Yahoo spurns Microsoft again as bad blood boils

Yahoo Inc. has rejected Microsoft's latest attempt to buy its online search operations in a "take or leave it" proposal that Yahoo said would have dismantled its Internet franchise.
As described by Yahoo in a statement released late Saturday, Microsoft packaged its latest offer with activist investor Carl Icahn, a billionaire who is seeking to overthrow Yahoo's board of directors in a shareholder meeting scheduled for Aug. 1.

Without providing many specifics, Yahoo said Microsoft renewed an earlier bid to buy the company's search engine and proposed turning over the remaining pieces to a board controlled by Icahn.

Yahoo said it received the complex proposal Friday and was given less than 24 hours to respond.

Backed into a corner, Yahoo lashed out in a blunt manner likely to inject even more bad blood into its already venomous relationship with Microsoft and Icahn.

"It is ludicrous to think that our board could accept such a proposal," Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock said in the statement. "While this type of erratic and unpredictable behavior is consistent with what we have come to expect from Microsoft, we will not be bludgeoned into a transaction that is not in the best interests of our stockholders."

In another indication of the animosity between the two companies, Bostock said Microsoft has taken the "completely absurd and irresponsible" stance of refusing to hold any further talks with Yahoo's current board and management.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment late Saturday. Efforts to reach Icahn were unsuccessful.

Yahoo said it unsuccessfully reiterated its willingness to sell the entire company to Microsoft for $47.5 billion, or $33 per share — a bid that the software maker dangled in early May before withdrawing it in a pique over Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang's demand for $37 per share.

Sunnyvale-based Yahoo hasn't explained why it finds a sale at $33 per share to be more palatable now than it was a little over two months ago. Microsoft, though, has said it's no longer interested in buying Yahoo in its entirety unless Icahn's board is on the other end of the negotiations.

The breakdown of those takeover negotiations infuriated many Yahoo shareholders who fear the company's stock price would plunge back below $20 — a threshold reached just before Microsoft made its initial bid in early January. Yahoo shares finished Friday at $23.57.

Yahoo's squandered opportunity to sell to Microsoft in May prompted Icahn to lead a rebellion aimed at removing Yahoo's entire board so he could fire Yang and try to revive sales talks with Microsoft.

Icahn's attempted coup gathered more steam earlier this week when Microsoft publicly announced it might be willing to buy all or part of Yahoo if shareholders voted to remove the current board. Yahoo shares climbed 10 percent during the past week on hopes that Microsoft's backing of Icahn might pave the way for a deal.

Since it dropped its bid to buy all of Yahoo, Microsoft has focused its overtures on Yahoo's search engine — the second most used on the Internet behind Google Inc.'s.

Microsoft in May offered to buy Yahoo's search operations for $1 billion and to spend another $8 billion to acquire a 16 percent stake in Yahoo's remaining operations.

Yahoo said the proposal that Microsoft submitted Friday "contains a number of improvements," but insisted it still wasn't good enough.

Yahoo offered no concrete details about what Icahn had proposed to do with the rest of the business, but indicated part of the plan included spinning off the company's Asian operations. The company pooh-poohed the notion of entrusting its business to Icahn, noting his inexperience in the Internet industry.

Icahn, who has been challenging corporate boards for more than two decades, owns a roughly 5 percent stake in Yahoo and hopes to make a profit by pushing the company's stock price above $30.

Instead of selling its search engine to Microsoft, Yahoo opted to forge an advertising partnership with rival Google Inc. That represented a bit of irony because Google's dominance of the Internet search advertising market is the primary reason that Microsoft is pursuing Yahoo.

As Google has become more successful, both Yahoo and Microsoft have been regressing, a dynamic that many analysts believe make it imperative for the two companies to put aside their differences and combine forces.

Yahoo has estimated that it can boost its annual revenue by about $800 million by relying on Google's superior technology to show some ads alongside the search results on its Web site.

But Yahoo's alliance with Google is being closely vetted by antitrust regulators because the two companies together control more than 80 percent of the U.S. search advertising market. To accommodate the review, Yahoo and Google have voluntarily agreed to wait until late September to begin working together.

Microsoft has maintained its proposal would be better for Yahoo's stockholders than the Google partnership.

Software problems bug Apple's launch of new iPhone

The launch of Apple Inc.'s much-anticipated new iPhone turned into an information-technology meltdown on Friday, as customers were unable to get their phones working.
It's such grief and aggravation," said Frederick Smalls, an insurance broker in Whitman, Mass., after spending two hours on the phone with Apple and AT&T Inc., trying to get his new iPhone to work.

In stores, people waited at counters to get the phones activated, as lines built behind them. Many of the customers had already camped out for several hours in line to become among the first with the new phone, which updates the one launched a year ago by speeding up Internet access and adding a navigation chip.

A spokesman for AT&T, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S., said there was a global problem with Apple's iTunes servers that prevented the phones from being fully activated in-store, as had been planned.

Instead, employees are telling buyers to go home and perform the last step by connecting their phones to their own computers, spokesman Michael Coe said.

However, the iTunes servers were equally hard to reach from home, leaving the phones unusable except for emergency calls.

The problem extended to owners of the previous iPhone model. A software update released for that phone on Friday morning required the phone to be reactivated through iTunes.

"It's a mess," said freelance photographer Giovanni Cipriano, who updated his first-generation iPhone only to find it unusable.

Apple shares fell $4.05, or 2.3 percent, to close Friday at $172.58 amid a general decline in U.S. stocks.

When the first iPhone went on sale a year ago, customers performed the whole activation procedure at home, freeing store employees to focus on sales. But the new model is subsidized by carriers, and Apple and AT&T therefore planned to activate all phones in-store to get customers on a contract.

The new phone went on sale in 21 countries on Friday, creating a global burden on the iTunes servers.

The iPhone has been widely lauded for its ease of use and rich features, but Apple is a newcomer to the cell-phone business, and it's made some missteps. When it launched the first phone in the U.S. a year ago, it initially priced the phones high, at $499 and $599, then cut the price by $200 just 10 weeks later, throwing early buyers for a loop.

Rollouts to other countries were slow, as Apple tried to get carriers on board with its unusual pricing scheme, which included monthly fees to Apple. The business model of the new phone follows industry norms, and the price is lower: $199 or $299 in the U.S.

On Thursday, Apple had problems with the launch of a new data service, MobileMe. The service is designed to synchronize a users personal data across devices, including the iPhone, but many users were denied access to their accounts.

Enthusiasm was high ahead of the Friday morning launch of the new phone.

Alex Cavallo, 24, was one of hundreds lined up at the Fifth Avenue store, just as he had been a year ago for the original iPhone. He sold that one recently on eBay in anticipation of the new one. In the meantime, he has been using another phone, which felt "uncomfortable."

"The iPhone is just a superior user experience," he said. The phone also proved a decent investment for him: He bought the old model for $599 and sold it for $570.

Nick Epperson, a 24-year-old grad student, spent the night outside an AT&T store in Atlanta, keeping his cheer up with bags of Doritos, three games of Scrabble and two packs of cigarettes. Asked why he was waiting in line, he responded simply "Chicks dig the iPhone."

IPhone fever was strong even in Japan, where consumers are used to tech-heavy phones that do restaurant searches, e-mail, music downloads, reading digital novels and electronic shopping. More than 1,000 people lined up at the Softbank Corp. store in Tokyo and the phone quickly sold out.

"Just look at this obviously innovative design," Yuki Kurita, 23, said as he emerged from buying his iPhone, carrying bags of clothing and a skateboard he had used as a chair during his wait outside the Tokyo store. "I am so thrilled just thinking about how I get to touch this."

The phone went on sale first in New Zealand, where hundreds of people lined up outside stores to snap it up right at midnight — 8 a.m. Thursday in New York.

"Steve Jobs knows what people want," Web developer Lucinda McCullough told the Christchurch Press newspaper, referring to Apple's chief executive. "And I need a new phone."

In Germany, sales were brisk at local carrier T-Mobile's stores, particularly in Munich, Hamburg and Cologne, said spokeswoman Marion Kessing

Angelina Jolie gives birth to twins

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has given birth to healthy twins, a girl and a boy, in the French Riviera maternity clinic she has checked into, the Nice-Matin newspaper reported Sunday quoting her gynaecologist.

The twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, were born shortly before 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) on Saturday, the paper said quoting gynaecologist Michel Sussmann.

Jolie is fine after having a Caesarian section, it added.Knox Leon was reported to weigh 2.27 kilogrammes (five pounds) and Vivienne Marcheline 2.28 kilogrammes (5.02 pounds).

The babies' first photograph was sold to a US paper for 11 million dollars (6.9 million euros), Nice-Matin said, adding that the money would be given to a humanitarian cause.

A source close to the clinic had said earlier the birth was expected in mid-August.The twins brought 33-year-old Jolie's brood with partner Brad Pitt to six.

Pitt was seen entering Nice's Santa Maria clinic, part of the Lanval hospital on the seafront Promenade des Anglais, on July 2 with at least two of their children.

A spokesperson for Lanval could not immediately be reached Sunday morning to confirm the report.

Jolie and Pitt, 44, have been the subject of celebrity gossip fascination since they met on the set of their 2005 film "Mr and Mrs Smith.

"Dubbed "Brangelina," they have adopted three children: Maddox, six, born in Cambodia; four-year-old Pax, born in Vietnam; and Zahara, three, born in Ethiopia.

They also had a biological child, Shiloh, born in Namibia, in May 2006.

The pair, who frequently top magazine lists of the world's most beautiful people or couple, set up home in May in a chateau they rented from an American acquaintaince in France's Provence region.

Pitt was previously married to "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston, while Jolie has been married twice before.

Microsoft to Stop Selling Windows XP

Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers Monday, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista.

Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP.

Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to buy XP for resale through the end of January. A version of XP will also remain available for ultra-low-cost PCs such as the Asus Eee PC.

A group of vocal computer users who rallied around a "Save XP" petition posted on the industry news site InfoWorld had been clamoring for Microsoft to keep selling XP until its next operating system, Windows 7, is available. The software maker has said it expects to release Windows 7 sometime in 2009.

Last week, Microsoft said it would provide full technical support for six-year-old Windows XP through 2009, and limited support through 2014.
