Some common tech myths busted

Have you heard the rumour about using your mobile phone as a digital key to unlock your car?

With myths like this one propagating at the speed of spam, it can be hard to tell fact from fiction.

We examine some common tech myths and tell you whether they’re downright silly, or if they hold more than a grain of truth.

‘You must completely discharge your laptop battery before recharging it’

Thankfully, this myth is only valid for nickel-cadmium (NiCd), or nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

Such batteries have a “memory” quirk that reduces their capacity if they are recharged before they run out of juice. So, they need to be discharged completely beforehand, or else you’ll see its capacity decrease at a much faster rate.

Computer maker Dell says that most of the laptops today use lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries, which do not suffer from the “memory effect” that affects their nickel-based brethren.

In fact, you should keep lithium-based batteries charged to avoid shortening their life span. We did a random check on several laptops from different manufacturers and found that all employ Li-ion batteries. Phew.

Just to be sure, check your batteries for the symbols Li-ion, NiCd or NiMH to see which advice applies.

‘Men shouldn’t use laptopsbecause it makes them infertile’

Unfortunately, for those too keen to whip out laptops on the long train commute, there’s some truth to this one.

A recent scientific study revealed that using a laptop on your lap can increase the temperature to up to 2.8°C in your, er, nether regions — not exactly the optimum temperature for the testes to produce sperm properly.

“The increased temperature comes about partly because of the positioning of the scrotum within the closed thighs and also from the radiation of heat from the laptop computer,” explained Dr Ng Kok Kit from Changi General Hospital. He added that not only is sperm production reduced, the shape of sperm and its movements are also affected.

He said: “All of these factors contribute to infertility. Men who are concerned with fertility should not work with laptops on their laps. At the very least, they should limit the amount of time their laptops are used in that manner.”

Gulp. Men, best to stick to a desk, or use a breakfast tray.

‘Metal detectors or airport X-ray scanners can erase data on your Digicams and memory cards’

Do you hesitate when asked to place your laptops or digital cameras through the X-ray scanners at the airport, fearing your precious data might be wiped clean by the machines?

I haven’t had any mishaps of losing data in such a way, even as I zip in and out of the country for work or holidays — I think you’d be more likely to delete your own data by accident.

Tests carried out by manufacturer SanDisk, the International Imaging Industry Association and the United States Transportation Security Administration found that X-ray scanners and walk-through or hand-held metal detectors do not affect the data on memory cards. In fact, old media formats like analogue film are more likely to be damaged from X-ray machines.

‘When your mobile phone runs out of juice, press *3370# to tap into its reserve battery power’

Each handset manufacturer has its own set of codes to enable hidden settings or functions. But, you can punch the above-mentioned numbers and symbols on some Nokia phones to enhance voice quality — which actually drains battery power at a faster rate.

Instead, typing in *4720# decreases voice quality and uses less battery power, so as to prolong slightly your phone’s standby time — but there’s no secret reservoir of battery power that you can tap into when you’re low on juice.

The voice quality trick only works on particular Nokia models — we found that it doesn’t work on some of its new phones that run on the S60 operating system and doesn’t apply to handsets from other manufacturers.

‘You should shut down the operating system before switching off the power to your computers to avoid data loss’

It has become standard practice for us to switch off our computers by shutting down the operating system first because we’ve been led to believe that any abrupt shutdown might cause data loss. But, some say that cutting power to your computer is harmless and won’t damage your hard drive as long as you’ve saved your work.

Well, according to Microsoft Singapore, all users should follow the proper shutdown procedure, regardless of the operating system in use.

“Users should avoid switching off power to the PC without having first saved the data and shut down properly, as this does affect the lifespan of the hard drives,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Today. “Microsoft’s advice to users is to ensure all documents are saved before shutting down their computers via the operating system. It is also important that users wait for a computer to shut down fully before switching off the power supply.”

The company added that it is not true that shutting down one’s PC every few hours will have a detrimental impact. In general, Microsoft advises that your computer should be shut down and allowed to “rest” whenever it is not in use.

Yahoo spurns Microsoft again as bad blood boils

Yahoo Inc. has rejected Microsoft's latest attempt to buy its online search operations in a "take or leave it" proposal that Yahoo said would have dismantled its Internet franchise.
As described by Yahoo in a statement released late Saturday, Microsoft packaged its latest offer with activist investor Carl Icahn, a billionaire who is seeking to overthrow Yahoo's board of directors in a shareholder meeting scheduled for Aug. 1.

Without providing many specifics, Yahoo said Microsoft renewed an earlier bid to buy the company's search engine and proposed turning over the remaining pieces to a board controlled by Icahn.

Yahoo said it received the complex proposal Friday and was given less than 24 hours to respond.

Backed into a corner, Yahoo lashed out in a blunt manner likely to inject even more bad blood into its already venomous relationship with Microsoft and Icahn.

"It is ludicrous to think that our board could accept such a proposal," Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock said in the statement. "While this type of erratic and unpredictable behavior is consistent with what we have come to expect from Microsoft, we will not be bludgeoned into a transaction that is not in the best interests of our stockholders."

In another indication of the animosity between the two companies, Bostock said Microsoft has taken the "completely absurd and irresponsible" stance of refusing to hold any further talks with Yahoo's current board and management.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment late Saturday. Efforts to reach Icahn were unsuccessful.

Yahoo said it unsuccessfully reiterated its willingness to sell the entire company to Microsoft for $47.5 billion, or $33 per share — a bid that the software maker dangled in early May before withdrawing it in a pique over Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang's demand for $37 per share.

Sunnyvale-based Yahoo hasn't explained why it finds a sale at $33 per share to be more palatable now than it was a little over two months ago. Microsoft, though, has said it's no longer interested in buying Yahoo in its entirety unless Icahn's board is on the other end of the negotiations.

The breakdown of those takeover negotiations infuriated many Yahoo shareholders who fear the company's stock price would plunge back below $20 — a threshold reached just before Microsoft made its initial bid in early January. Yahoo shares finished Friday at $23.57.

Yahoo's squandered opportunity to sell to Microsoft in May prompted Icahn to lead a rebellion aimed at removing Yahoo's entire board so he could fire Yang and try to revive sales talks with Microsoft.

Icahn's attempted coup gathered more steam earlier this week when Microsoft publicly announced it might be willing to buy all or part of Yahoo if shareholders voted to remove the current board. Yahoo shares climbed 10 percent during the past week on hopes that Microsoft's backing of Icahn might pave the way for a deal.

Since it dropped its bid to buy all of Yahoo, Microsoft has focused its overtures on Yahoo's search engine — the second most used on the Internet behind Google Inc.'s.

Microsoft in May offered to buy Yahoo's search operations for $1 billion and to spend another $8 billion to acquire a 16 percent stake in Yahoo's remaining operations.

Yahoo said the proposal that Microsoft submitted Friday "contains a number of improvements," but insisted it still wasn't good enough.

Yahoo offered no concrete details about what Icahn had proposed to do with the rest of the business, but indicated part of the plan included spinning off the company's Asian operations. The company pooh-poohed the notion of entrusting its business to Icahn, noting his inexperience in the Internet industry.

Icahn, who has been challenging corporate boards for more than two decades, owns a roughly 5 percent stake in Yahoo and hopes to make a profit by pushing the company's stock price above $30.

Instead of selling its search engine to Microsoft, Yahoo opted to forge an advertising partnership with rival Google Inc. That represented a bit of irony because Google's dominance of the Internet search advertising market is the primary reason that Microsoft is pursuing Yahoo.

As Google has become more successful, both Yahoo and Microsoft have been regressing, a dynamic that many analysts believe make it imperative for the two companies to put aside their differences and combine forces.

Yahoo has estimated that it can boost its annual revenue by about $800 million by relying on Google's superior technology to show some ads alongside the search results on its Web site.

But Yahoo's alliance with Google is being closely vetted by antitrust regulators because the two companies together control more than 80 percent of the U.S. search advertising market. To accommodate the review, Yahoo and Google have voluntarily agreed to wait until late September to begin working together.

Microsoft has maintained its proposal would be better for Yahoo's stockholders than the Google partnership.

Software problems bug Apple's launch of new iPhone

The launch of Apple Inc.'s much-anticipated new iPhone turned into an information-technology meltdown on Friday, as customers were unable to get their phones working.
It's such grief and aggravation," said Frederick Smalls, an insurance broker in Whitman, Mass., after spending two hours on the phone with Apple and AT&T Inc., trying to get his new iPhone to work.

In stores, people waited at counters to get the phones activated, as lines built behind them. Many of the customers had already camped out for several hours in line to become among the first with the new phone, which updates the one launched a year ago by speeding up Internet access and adding a navigation chip.

A spokesman for AT&T, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S., said there was a global problem with Apple's iTunes servers that prevented the phones from being fully activated in-store, as had been planned.

Instead, employees are telling buyers to go home and perform the last step by connecting their phones to their own computers, spokesman Michael Coe said.

However, the iTunes servers were equally hard to reach from home, leaving the phones unusable except for emergency calls.

The problem extended to owners of the previous iPhone model. A software update released for that phone on Friday morning required the phone to be reactivated through iTunes.

"It's a mess," said freelance photographer Giovanni Cipriano, who updated his first-generation iPhone only to find it unusable.

Apple shares fell $4.05, or 2.3 percent, to close Friday at $172.58 amid a general decline in U.S. stocks.

When the first iPhone went on sale a year ago, customers performed the whole activation procedure at home, freeing store employees to focus on sales. But the new model is subsidized by carriers, and Apple and AT&T therefore planned to activate all phones in-store to get customers on a contract.

The new phone went on sale in 21 countries on Friday, creating a global burden on the iTunes servers.

The iPhone has been widely lauded for its ease of use and rich features, but Apple is a newcomer to the cell-phone business, and it's made some missteps. When it launched the first phone in the U.S. a year ago, it initially priced the phones high, at $499 and $599, then cut the price by $200 just 10 weeks later, throwing early buyers for a loop.

Rollouts to other countries were slow, as Apple tried to get carriers on board with its unusual pricing scheme, which included monthly fees to Apple. The business model of the new phone follows industry norms, and the price is lower: $199 or $299 in the U.S.

On Thursday, Apple had problems with the launch of a new data service, MobileMe. The service is designed to synchronize a users personal data across devices, including the iPhone, but many users were denied access to their accounts.

Enthusiasm was high ahead of the Friday morning launch of the new phone.

Alex Cavallo, 24, was one of hundreds lined up at the Fifth Avenue store, just as he had been a year ago for the original iPhone. He sold that one recently on eBay in anticipation of the new one. In the meantime, he has been using another phone, which felt "uncomfortable."

"The iPhone is just a superior user experience," he said. The phone also proved a decent investment for him: He bought the old model for $599 and sold it for $570.

Nick Epperson, a 24-year-old grad student, spent the night outside an AT&T store in Atlanta, keeping his cheer up with bags of Doritos, three games of Scrabble and two packs of cigarettes. Asked why he was waiting in line, he responded simply "Chicks dig the iPhone."

IPhone fever was strong even in Japan, where consumers are used to tech-heavy phones that do restaurant searches, e-mail, music downloads, reading digital novels and electronic shopping. More than 1,000 people lined up at the Softbank Corp. store in Tokyo and the phone quickly sold out.

"Just look at this obviously innovative design," Yuki Kurita, 23, said as he emerged from buying his iPhone, carrying bags of clothing and a skateboard he had used as a chair during his wait outside the Tokyo store. "I am so thrilled just thinking about how I get to touch this."

The phone went on sale first in New Zealand, where hundreds of people lined up outside stores to snap it up right at midnight — 8 a.m. Thursday in New York.

"Steve Jobs knows what people want," Web developer Lucinda McCullough told the Christchurch Press newspaper, referring to Apple's chief executive. "And I need a new phone."

In Germany, sales were brisk at local carrier T-Mobile's stores, particularly in Munich, Hamburg and Cologne, said spokeswoman Marion Kessing

Angelina Jolie gives birth to twins

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has given birth to healthy twins, a girl and a boy, in the French Riviera maternity clinic she has checked into, the Nice-Matin newspaper reported Sunday quoting her gynaecologist.

The twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, were born shortly before 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) on Saturday, the paper said quoting gynaecologist Michel Sussmann.

Jolie is fine after having a Caesarian section, it added.Knox Leon was reported to weigh 2.27 kilogrammes (five pounds) and Vivienne Marcheline 2.28 kilogrammes (5.02 pounds).

The babies' first photograph was sold to a US paper for 11 million dollars (6.9 million euros), Nice-Matin said, adding that the money would be given to a humanitarian cause.

A source close to the clinic had said earlier the birth was expected in mid-August.The twins brought 33-year-old Jolie's brood with partner Brad Pitt to six.

Pitt was seen entering Nice's Santa Maria clinic, part of the Lanval hospital on the seafront Promenade des Anglais, on July 2 with at least two of their children.

A spokesperson for Lanval could not immediately be reached Sunday morning to confirm the report.

Jolie and Pitt, 44, have been the subject of celebrity gossip fascination since they met on the set of their 2005 film "Mr and Mrs Smith.

"Dubbed "Brangelina," they have adopted three children: Maddox, six, born in Cambodia; four-year-old Pax, born in Vietnam; and Zahara, three, born in Ethiopia.

They also had a biological child, Shiloh, born in Namibia, in May 2006.

ASUS Eee PC 901 vs. MSI Wind NB U100

Let's face it, the popular ASUS Eee PC that spawned from the idea of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project has for several months been the only product that has prominently formed this netbook category of products. However today, many competitors have jumped on to the netbook bandwagon, some of which have started retailing recently and some others that are still in production pipeline. With this sudden interest spike in getting a small and handy predominantly Internet-based companion, many netbook followers have no doubt been waiting for this moment to find out just how the Eee PC formula (the sole option in the market previously) now fares against new competition.

Intel's Atom processors are the new market drivers in this netbook segment and luckily for you, we got our hands on the MSI Wind NB U100 and the ASUS Eee PC 901 - the first netbooks to sport this new processor and we'll be pitting them against each other in this shootout! You're probably wondering why we're pitting the Eee PC 901 instead of the more appropriate and recently launched Eee PC 1000 against the Wind NB U100, but unfortunately review units weren't quite ready, but nevertheless we went ahead to compare these two popular netbook options to give you a good understanding of their capabilities and help you decide what's best. Of course, both machines have their own strengths/weaknesses and we've weighed them carefully in our considerations. So first off, we'll be looking at each individual netbook separately before finally bringing them both together for a much anticipated duel.

The MSI Wind NB U100 versus the familiar looking ASUS Eee PC 901. Stormtrooper white versus Darth Vader black!

We grabbed a HP 2133 Mini-Note PC for a quick comparison before we started our shootout proper. The Wind NB U100 was of the same size as the HP 2133 Mini-Note

All three units were pretty much the same thickness, so those looking for a super slim netbook will be out of luck for now.

Netbooks versus Notebooks: The New Age Mindshare Battle

While the lines between notebooks and netbooks have been drawn, it's still hard for most people to appreciate the differences between both machines. Most people still consider the burgeoning netbook market as part of the notebook market, while few see it for what it really is, another segregation of the already saturated portable market with yet another device gunning for your consumer dollars.

John was facing a dilemma. Stuck with a limited budget, he had only a limited amount of cash to spend and was torn between getting a low cost laptop or getting one of the newer netbooks. While the laptop he was looking at was slightly out of his budget, the netbook was definitely within range. What he was unsure of was the specifications of the newer netbooks compared against the notebooks he was familiar with. John was no geek god, but he knew enough to get by, which made him all the more curious about netbooks: were they any good compared to a full fledged notebook?

Netbooks and notebooks aren't any different when you get down to the basics; both devices share pretty similar features, which is why most people like John tend to lump them both together in the same category. Designed with portability in mind, netbooks and notebooks are computers for users on the go with programs for both work and entertainment. Factor in a keyboard, a LCD screen, hard drive, speakers and internet capability, the line between both machines becomes smudged despite our earlier statements to the contrary. The key difference the netbook offers is its smaller form factor and leaner hardware for longer useage periods, but is limited in its processing capabilities and is more optimal for simple Internet-based usage.

Jane on the other hand had a much better time with decisions. She didn't know much about netbooks or notebooks, but she had a budget set and had already made up her mind with regards to her purchase. For her, it was a matter not of specifications, but more a choice of portability, especially with her small frame. With all the new netbook models available since the launch of Intel's Atom processor, she was spoilt for choice when it came to picking a netbook that would suit her. The expensive ultra-portable notebooks that she had briefly flirted with in her mind before was now an option she could happily skip. That leaves her with one burning question: which netbook model to get, and why.

With the success of the ASUS Eee PC 701, vendors started jumping into the netbook bandwagon. Originally designed to be an alternative to the OLPC project for retail, the Eee PC quickly found its way to success through its cheap price and diminutive size, both of which were touted as its strengths. While demand quickly outstripped supply, consumers soon got tired of the new models that only offered a minor upgrade. It was time for a change, and the market gladly obliged with newer, faster and slightly larger models.

Microsoft to Stop Selling Windows XP

Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers Monday, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista.

Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP.

Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to buy XP for resale through the end of January. A version of XP will also remain available for ultra-low-cost PCs such as the Asus Eee PC.

A group of vocal computer users who rallied around a "Save XP" petition posted on the industry news site InfoWorld had been clamoring for Microsoft to keep selling XP until its next operating system, Windows 7, is available. The software maker has said it expects to release Windows 7 sometime in 2009.

Last week, Microsoft said it would provide full technical support for six-year-old Windows XP through 2009, and limited support through 2014.
