Myanmar extends Aung San Suu Kyi's detention: police

Military-run Myanmar on Friday extended the detention of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, police sources told AFP.

"We issued an order of further detention," a police source said.

The latest period of her detention began in May 2003 and was scheduled to expire this weekend.

Japan's Jiji press news agency reported the military had extended her house arrest for another 12 months, but the police source declined to confirm the new timeframe of her detention.

An Asian diplomat in Yangon said a police car was seen entering her house earlier in the day.

The 61-year-old Nobel peace laureate has spent most of the past 17 years under house arrest at her lakeside Yangon home and has little contact with the outside world, apart from her live-in maid and visits from her doctor.
